AFTERNOON PLENARY SESSION
CHANGING HIGH-RISK ASTHMA IN MEMPHIS THROUGH PARTNERSHIP:
CHAMP(ION) FOR CHILDREN WITH HIGH-RISK ASTHMA
presented by Christie Michael, MD
Establishing a high-risk pediatric asthma clinic is challenging but if done well can lead to
significant improvements in patient outcomes as well as reduce health care costs. Dr. Michael,
Medical Director of CHAMP, will review the components of their program that have led to huge
improvements in outcomes. In addition, she will offer advice on starting a high-risk asthma clinic.
BREAK-OUT SESSION 2: (Choose one event from list)
A: ALLERGIC RHINITIS AND ASTHMA
presented by Mark Wurth, MD, PhD
Allergic rhinitis is a major co-morbid factor in asthma control. Dr. Wurth will review the
anatomy of the upper airway, the association of asthma and allergies and what common
allergens may trigger asthma. He will also review allergy testing methods and treatment of
allergic rhinitis.
B: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ASTHMA, GERD, AND EOSINOPHILIC ESOPHAGITIS
presented by Girish Hiremath, MD, MPH
This session will focus on understanding the epidemiologic and pathophysiologic relationship
between asthma, GERD and EoE.
C: SPIROMETRY IN ASTHMA: WHY, WHEN, HOW?
presented by Natasha Vanderbilt, RRT and Michael O’Connor, MD
In this hands-on session, spirometry techniques and basic interpretation will be
reviewed including common mistakes made in both.
BREAK AND REFRESHMENTS
BREAK-OUT SESSION 3: (Choose one event from list)
A: PSYCHOSOCIAL BARRIERS TO ASTHMA CONTROL
presented by Deanna Reese, MSW, LMSW
Psychosocial barriers are known to negatively impact pediatric asthma control. Ms. Reese will
review barriers and discuss ways to combat them, including collaboration with community
agencies.
B: ASTHMA EDUCATION TOOLS FOR OFFICE USE
presented by Lauren Carlson, MSN, FNP
This presentation will focus on asthma tools such as validated questionnaires, asthma
action plans, peak flow meters, asthma games and pediatric self-management tools for home
or school use. We will also discuss clinical tools and quick-reference guides for clinicians
that aid in assessing asthma severity and control.
C: INTRODUCTION TO SEVERE ASTHMA
presented by Christian Rosas-Salazaar, MD, MPH
In this session, we will discuss the challenges of defining severe asthma in children. We
will also describe a systematic approach to diagnose and manage this condition. In
addition, we will review current and future research in this field.
NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR ASTHMA SELF-MANANGEMENT EDUCATION
presented by Ellen O’Kelley, PNP-BC, AE-C
National standards for ASME were published in 2015. Ms. O’Kelley will discuss the 16 standards
and the implications for existing and future asthma programs.
CLOSING REMARKS
presented by Paul Moore, MD
