The Vanderbilt Observational Experience Program
All VOE Participants are expected to have a Host. A host is a Vanderbilt employee facilitating
your observational experience. This is a great way to determine if the day to day duties and set-
ting of an academic university are a fit for you in the future.
Suggestions to get the most out of your observation experience include:
Active participation in your shadowing experience is highly recommended. This may include
asking questions and taking notes.
Being observant and paying close attention is obviously central to making the most of this
experience.
Engaging your host regarding their experiences and opinions is crucial to your observation
experience.
As this program provides observational opportunities, there is absolutely no hands-on experi-
ence. You should remain with your host the entire length of your visit at Vanderbilt.
Participants are not permitted to:
Touch patients, equipment or computers
Collect data
Assist staff
Perform any duties, including filing, transporting materials, or data entry.
